In math, what are “exploding dots?” I work with students and one of them is taking a course called Exploding Dots. I thought it sounded fun so I looked it up—I’m having trouble even understanding the concept of it, much less how it actually works.
i got curious and looked this up. from what i understand, exploding dots is a more visual method of explaining regrouping in math. 10 dots combine and explode into 1 dot, but in the box to its left.

It’s a method of teaching/learning basic arithmetics like addition and multiplication. It works the same way that arithmetics work, they are just a way of visualization which students supposedly may find more intuitively clear.
