In the US, why is ‘E’ skipped in grading is schools? Students can get A, B, C,D or F but not E, why?

A, B, C, D are the ratings of a passing grade. The F isn’t a grade it’s short for fail. Some schools have another one as well i for incomplete which is normally given before a year end fail mark to show the kid isn’t doing the work. You can often correct an i as it shows up during your mid term grade.
