People would often mistake “E” for “Excellent”, so they nixed the bottom bar. “F” for “Fail” was easier.

In my schools, we did have A through E, but no F.

A: 90-100%
B: 80-89%
C: 70-79%
D: 60-69%
E: 0-59%

You consider passed anything D or above.

I always tell my kids, I like A’s and B’s but I will accept C’s. Anything less and we will need to work on it more together. All of my kids still in school, are on sports teams and have to maintain at least a C average to stay on the team.

Also, is a grade of “S” a real thing, or does it only exist in Japanese video games?

When I was in Jr High in the 80s.. we did have ABCDE. E was a fail. In high school it was F.

Ever hear the phrase “E for Effort”? It was used to say, ‘you tried, but didn’t get it. ‘ It was used to indicate the student at least made the Effort on the assignment, and was spared the dreaded Failure grade. This indicated that perhaps tutoring or special instruction was needed. Fs were for the true miscreants. Bear in mind this was Elementary school midway through the last century.

Man some of these thresholds for grades. 93 is an A, 85 is a B, 77 is a C, 70 is a D, below that is an F.

When I was in elementary school – quite a long time ago – E was given as a failing grade.

At some point E was no longer used and F become the norm for failure.

In the Detroit area of Michigan at least, we didn’t use F’s. The grading scale did go from A-E, with E being the failing grade. I’ve never seen an F on a report card or progress report in my whole life.

I always thought E was skipped because back in the old, old, OLD days- no computer, no phone, etc. it was too easy for a kid to up their grade from F to E by just adding a line when showing it to their parents, etc. But hey, we’re talking about the education system that teaches you the 3 Rs.. .Reading, UM Writing, and um.. Arithmetic. The 3 -um- Rs.
