question: why use a letter system at all? why not just a number score?

Alright this probably doesn’t belong here so feel free to downvote me in case.

So when I was in high school, in Italy, grades were given on a scale from 2-10 (ten being the best).
on quarter reports, our grades were written in full words, not number. And since 6 is written SEI, they were probably afraid that someone could manually change it into 7 (which is written SETTE), so they wrote 6 in latin rather than italian.

6, in latin, is written SEX.

A, B, C, D are the ratings of a passing grade. The F isn’t a grade it’s short for fail. Some schools have another one as well i for incomplete which is normally given before a year end fail mark to show the kid isn’t doing the work. You can often correct an i as it shows up during your mid term grade.

Americans will measure by any made up standard as long as it’s not decimal based. Why not just put the number or percentage?

Because A stands for Acceptional in America. What the hell could E stand for?

And they wonder why the American education system is so off. They can’t even have a standardized scoring system. I was an A student until we moved and my A’s became B’s, because in the new place A= 100-96, B=95-91, C=90-86, D=85-81. any thing lower was NP= not passing. My parents grounded me over and over for getting B’s, until the school sent them a letter explaining their scoring system.

American here who only saw F for failing and never E my whole life. You just brought up a great question I had never thought about. Wtf
