Is having more muscle mass in itself beneficial to health?

Need to specify that I’m not asking about *building* muscle, which obviously does improve health, because you need regular strenuous exercise to build it. Which improves all sorts of bodily functions.

I’m asking if having muscle mass itself is beneficial? And if so, to what extent? Is there a limit where it eventually becomes detrimental?

All I can think of is it increases the total amount of blood in your body, which could be beneficial in certain ways. Curious to hear if anyone knows specifics or if any kind of studies have been done.
