The advantage is bilateral development – the symmetric two-sided creature has lots of advantages in movement, sometimes in redundancy of systems and others. The hymen is a _bibroduct_ of that overall system. Since it doesn’t inhibit reproduction and the bilateral-ness is an advantage it survived.
