Is there a psychological explanation for why music is able to trigger certain emotions?

The same reason any stimuli triggers emotions. Our brain uses our senses to tell the body how to react to certain situations.

Mostly this is a conditioned response. You think sad music sounds sad because society has reinforced that minor keys sound sad. (If your a westerner). In other cultures minor keys aren’t perceived to be sad at all. Other cultures don’t use the same musical structure at all. They have different views of what sad music sounds like.

This one’s nurture not nature.
