The ideal tongue position while singing is flat at the bottom of your mouth, relaxed, forward (so the back of your tongue doesn’t obstruct the sound), with the tip tucked behind your bottom teeth. Positions other than this = tongue tension. Tongue tension is a major struggle for singers. Different types of tension become habits, and you tend to fall back on this habit because it is familiar and you know the results you can get with it, even if it’s not the technical ideal. For example, I tend to tilt my head so my chin goes down and to the left when I need to hit a higher belting note. It “helps” me know I’m going to hit the note, but at the expense of proper (safe/ sustainable / relaxed / ergonomic) technique.
