It’s safe because it’s Japan (american vassal) doing it. Conversely if it was China doing the exact same thing you would never hear the end of it.
It’s not a good thing to do, but it’s waaaay less of an issue than it sounds. “Radioactive” is the buzzword to rule all buzzwords basically.
