JEDEC vs XMP for RAM and why both are important?

In this context, JEDEC is the general standardization of RAM modules, so they follow certain rules allowing RAM to work in every system.

XMP on the other hand is specific for Intel and allows memory and the CPU to go beyond what JEDEC specifies. This basically allows overclocking without manual intervention, because both the memory and the CPU / memory controller know XMP and can therefore use the higher specs the module supports.
