Just like in the movies, why does lightning strike a few seconds before rain begins?

In movies, it’s quite common to have lightning and thunder, and the rain starts after a few seconds. Recently this exact phenomenon has happened to me multiple times, is there a explanation for this, or is it just my imagination?

The thunderstom moves towards you, rain and lightning both come from it. Since lightning strikes fairly often, chances are high that one would hit within a short time frame before the rain finally reaches you, nothing else.

I can think of multiple occssions where I’ve experienced rain before lightening. You may be experiencing confirmation bias.
