Laying on my side to unplug nose

Why is it that if one of my nostrils is plugged, if I lay on the unplugged side, the other side will unplug and the clear one will plug and vice versa?

Gravity. If you are sitting upright, mucus can use gravity to drain.

When you switch sides, the side on the bottom is going to end up with more congestion.

As the other commenter suggested, it’s gravity affecting the mucus.

This used to drive me nuts as a kid. I got to the point of desperately pushing on the soft cartilage on the side of my nose to “open” that side up. After doing it so much I got my nose to “crack” one night. Ever since then I can crack my nose similar to how people crack their knuckles.
