Lies, damned lies, and statistics

“Lies, damned lies, and statistics” is a phrase describing the persuasive power of statistics to bolster weak arguments, “one of the best, and best-known” critiques of applied statistics.[2] It is also sometimes colloquially used to doubt statistics used to prove an opponent’s point.
from wikipedia, which leads me to my question:

what is this critique?

The issue doesn’t come from the statistics per se, but by our brain looking for meaning deeper than what the stat told us.
For example you might have heard that women are on average shorter than men. This statistical information doesn’t say “if you are looking for a tall human dismiss every woman you encouter”.
