When people _feel_ sad, you can _see_ them crying. Loneliness is a feeling. Social isolation is something seen. You can be isolated and not feel lonely or be surrounded by people yet feel lonely. It is a sense of need for human connection that is fulfilled or when unfulfilled becomes loneliness. But someone may have little need so are content with being alone.

Comes up in the setting of alienation, where we feel isolated and disconnected from others even though we are more than ever connected to each other.
