Usually for the big films with big budgets, there are a bunch of different VFX companies which will each be assigned different scenes to model and animate. The individual teams usually won’t see much of the film in pre-production other than the specific parts they’re working on.
Sometimes, different companies will even be responsible for different visual elements which appear in the same scene. If one company did the exploding building in the background, and another company did the animated CGI character in the foreground, then those assets will be two separate finished products, which get composited together after they’re done working on them.
