Sorry but stuck on stupid on this one.

If I have a random number – let’s say 545 and I reduce it by 20%. It’s reduced by 109 making it 436.

But if I want to increase it back to 545 I have to add 25%

Yup. In my first job working in building estimating we would add 1/39th for an anticipated builders discount. I often wondered why 1/39th until I learned that’s because the contractor would take off 2.5% (or 1/40th) which gets you back to the original amount.

tl:dr If you remove 1/40th of something you have to add back 1/39th to get you back to 100%.
