Memory exploits prior to W^X (Computer Science)

Greetings r/explainlikeimfive,

I have posted here in the hopes that I can find some study materials / and responses in a short period of time on the topic of Vulnerabilities in computer memory. More specifically W\^X but all materials for any vulnerabilities are welcome.

My specific question is this:

What would be a good example of an exploit prior to the idea of W\^X? I know that the textbook idea is that you want to write cpu instructions in memory, (a.k.a. RAM,) at the location of where some data is meant to be kept and then get those instructions to run. Is this simply process injection? I can’t find anything relative on the internet.

P.S.

If the fate of this post is to be nuked because it may seem slightly abrasive towards the purpose of please drop resources for better subreddits, forums, and study materials / responses in haste.

Thank you all in advance! God speed!
