Memory Recall

During memory recall, there is a replaying of neural activity that was originally generated in the brain during a specific event.

How does the brain remember which neural activity to replay in the first place when I want to remember something?

I would also like an explanation on how the current emotions of the person remembering a past event affects that memory, and future recollections of that memory.
