Microsoft Single Use Code

Hi all,

I keep getting emails from Microsoft saying:

We’ve received your request for a single-use code to use with your Microsoft account.
Your single-use code is: XXXXXX
If you didn’t request this code, you can safely ignore this email. Someone else might have typed your email address by mistake.

I don’t think it’s a scam but just curious why this keeps happening, if others are experiencing the same thing, and what can be done?

Someone knows your backup e-mail to your Microsoft account but not the password. Microsoft is blowing it off like it isn’t a vulnerability and offers no protection against the mass login attempts.

Before someone else comes with the the ELI5, start by not clicking any links on the email and change your passwords asap.

I’ve been getting the same thing…it’s been a few days since I’ve seen it but prior to that for about the past week or two I’ve been getting a few of these emails per day.

As far as I can tell, as others have said someone knows the email name but not your password. As such, there’s really nothing to do unless you decide to stop using that email. With no password, and no access to your email to get the single-use code, they can’t get into the account no matter how much they try.
