Survivorship bias and nostalgia
The people that grew up in the 80’s are today’s thirty-something and forty-something year olds. It’s an age category that’s very active and vocal online and in media. They are also people who are reaching that age where they get nostalgic for cultural stuff from their youth. Combine that with the survivorship bias of only the positive memories remaining (people tend to forget about the enormous piles of shit music/television/fashion created in the 80s) and you’ve got a large group of influential and nostalgic people who only remember the good shit from back in the day.
