My husband and I moved out to the northeast in Mass and have started to collect seaglass. Where did it come from? What’s the history? Why is this a tradition out here? I’d love to understand more!

Yes, it’s just glass that found its way into the ocean. The salt and sand does the rest. I’ve found plenty of “not finished” glass lol. You can recreate the effect with a rock tumbler but the real deal is way better imho
What happens is the local Townies hit the local packy and pick up wicked cheap wine, beer, and liquor. Many of these items come in colorful glass bottles. Cheap liquor is especially good because uniquely colored glass is used to make swill appear classy to the townies.
Once the local is good and liquored up, the now inebriated human tosses their spent glassware into the rock jetty. The sound of shattering glass briefly brings a spark of life into their glassy eyes, but no real joy because now it’s back to the duplex to yell at their neighbors dog.
Tl;dr: yeah, it’s just broken colored glass that the water, sand, and salt polish smooth.
