Hi!

Great question.

The answer sort of depends on . . .

* How well insulated your space is

* Things about the efficiency of your AC unit.

* The difference between outdoor temp and your desired indoor temp

* Some aspects of (shadows vs. sunlight on cooling unit) radiant heating that are hard to quantify.

* Your level of comfort with low or fluctuating temp.

Most efficient would be if the outdoor temp (say at night) was cooler than the desired target temperature so you can very easily (less power used) cool the indoor air to the desired temp (or even a bit below you daytime target temp).

Then you allow the well insulated home to go up a little bit in temperature until night comes again and you run your A/C unit.

Most comfortable would be to set your A/C for the desired temp, and then keep the home at that temp.

This will waste energy by running the A/C when the outdoor temp is highest which makes the A/C work harder as a heat pump.
