Could someone please explain in simple terms what the Internet of Things or IoT is? The Wikipedia page is a bit vague.

Answer: Internet-connected devices that do not have a Windows or Mac operating system. (They just have…a thermostat operating system with WiFi. It’s cheaper.)
They are notoriously insecure, and Russian hackers regularly prowl the Internet searching for vulnerable IoT devices.
