Podcast headphones

Why do podcasts and radio broadcasts require the use of headphones? From Howard Stern to Joe Rogan, everyone talking into a microphone has big headphones on. Why are they necessary and what sound is coming out of them?

The headphones play back the audio from the microphones. There’s two main reasons for this. Firstly, without the earphones, you could accidentally move too far from your microphone and have no idea that people can’t hear you or if the microphone malfunctions, you might keep talking for a long time without realizing it. Secondly, when you’re talking with people normally, you can focus on one person at a time and hear what they’re saying even if more people are talking around you. In a radio show or podcast, the listener hears everybody’s voice and multiple people talking simultaneously makes the speech very difficult or impossible to understand. When everyone uses headphones, they can better notice if they’re talking over each other and the resulting audio is better to listen to.
