– Rated power (watts) vs Volts*Amps watts in a solar powered system

Hey all,

I’m getting quotes to set up a solar powered system for our new offices, but the one quote shows some of our 24″ screens using “300 watts” lol, which I know to be a gross overcalculation, based on 1.5amps \* \~200volts. However, the rated wattage draw is 16watts as per the product specification.

Can anyone educate my dumbass on what actually matters in terms of provisioning for a electrical system/solar powered system?

Thanks.

might be better to ask /r/solar

It would be helpful to describe your setup in more detail. Where are you getting the 1.5A and 200v numbers? These values would give you 300W of power.

“Rated power” is generally the rate of power which the component is designed to run most efficiently at.

300W definitely seems like a very high estimate for a computer monitor. Even a high end monitor at maximum brightness would probably draw less than half of that.

Possibly their estimates don’t account for modern monitor technologies, or are deliberately inflated to give a large buffer space.
