Rushing, bidding, etc. for fraternities and sororities

Many of my friends in university are joining fraternities/sororities and are throwing around terms such as “rush,” “bid,” etc. How on earth does “rushing,” “bidding,” “recruitment,” etc. for fraternities/sororities work? I would be happy if the whole process was explained. I really want to know.

So all of this is apart of recruitment for greek life.

1) To show your interest, you go to “rush events” or also sometime known as “rush week”. These might be house parties, outings to a bar/club, or maybe something more wholesome like volunteering. The point is just to give you a chance to meet the people in the frat/sorority and see if you actually like them, and for them to also see if they think you would be a good fit in their group. The events towards the end of this week tend to be invite only with the invites sent to their favorite attendees, it might be a more formal interview depending on the frat, etc.

2) Sometime at the end, after participating in enough of these rush week events, if the current members decided that they like you, they will offer you a bid, which is basically an invite to join as a temporary member. You pick one from your favorite frat to accept and you now become a provisional member for a bit.

3) Now that you’re a provisional member they might have you do some more stuff throughout the quarter/semester, which can range from just going to enough of their events to hazing/completing risky activities. If you pass then at the end of that semester/quarter you are accepted as a full member.
