Can someone help me understand the role of an SBC in today’s communications space?

The SBC is like a Receptionist that wouldn’t let you past their desk but will pass messages back and forth to someone inside.
It terminates the a VoIP Session and then recreates it on the other side. So instead of having a single end-to-end session, you end up with 2 separate sessions with an SBC in the middle. Mainly used for security reasons.
