Smooth type of microfiber vs towel-like texture?

Below are the two types of cleaning cloths I often see when I hear of microfiber:

Smooth: [https://prnt.sc/jKwZM9FvVaaI](https://prnt.sc/jKwZM9FvVaaI)

Towel-like: [https://prnt.sc/MuyQaEnwoAo6](https://prnt.sc/MuyQaEnwoAo6)

Are these both microfiber? How/why are they different? I’ve used the smooth textured one to clean my glasses before and is the one I’ve always thought of as “microfiber” but apparently that isn’t the case. Can either of them be used to clean glasses and/or device screens? The second just looks like a normal cleaning towel or rag.

Any fabric type can be made from microfiber, just like it can be made from cotton or nylon or whatever other fiber. Microfiber is just a very thin fiber, which makes the streaks left when polishing with it so small that they don’t distort light.

The towel-like kind is better at picking up dirt and grime, while the smooth kind is better at leaving a clean-looking final result (until it gets grimy, then it’ll just smear that around).

I clean school computer screens sometimes, and prefer the fluffy kind, because they last longer.
