I need this literally explained like I’m 5, well actually 4. My 4 year old is asking what a “solar flare” is.

In 4yo terms, it’s a small (from the Sun’s point of view) explosion on the surface of the sun.
In ELI5 terms, it’s when “tangled up” magnetic fields suddenly snap back into order, releasing charged particles that were trapped in those magnetic fields and fling them out in a massive wave.
