some drinks (like coke) are packaged in aluminium cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles – why are there three different types of containers instead of just one?

Money/cost of course.

Aesthetics.

Glass is heavy and fragile, metal and plastic are much less easy to break.

Plastic is often porous/permeable. Air can pass through (molecule by molecule) and change the quality of the contents. Glass and metal are more resistant.

Metal corrodes. tomato acid will eat a hole in the can.

So in practice it’s usually a combination. Plastic lined cans. Metal lined pouches, like juice boxes.
