Split ends. Why do they happen, and why is it sometimes not at the end? Also, how do they split into like five pieces sometimes?

Let’s pretend this post is not in response to my dire need for a haircut.

Split ends occur when the ends of your hair becomes brittle and dry due to exposure to chemicals or weather conditions. They can also occur if your hair isn’t getting enough nourishment. Sometimes they split into many pieces because one piece that is spit could be split again (sort of like the end of a frayed rope, if you will). It could also be looked at as one side of your single strand of hair has had more damage than the other, which causes more splitting.
