Spurious selection

The textbook definition : Spurious selection occurs when mortality differences ascribed to groups are formed by factors which are not the true causes of these differences. For example mortality differences by region may be put down to the actual class structure of the region itself whereas a differing varying mix of occupations region by region could be having a major effect. So Region is spurious and being confounded with occupation.
