The first two characters in the SWIFT code is the country code. This makes it very effective to find out which country you are to send the money to. There are a number of different places where you can stop the transaction. Each bank can filter out the transactions based on the country code of the destination account. Most countries also have a national transaction hub which also handle SWIFT transactions for most banks and the transactions may be filtered out here. In addition the SWIFT organization itself may stop working with Russian banks purging their records from the databases they maintain and filter any transactions they handle.
