If we could tell them apart, we wouldnt have to call something “deja-vu”. The term exists specifically to describe something that we THINK is our memory. If we knew, for a fact, then we wouldnt be in this situation in the first place.

I am by no means an expert, but one thing to keep in mind is that all our memories are subject to change over time. We routinely prune or alter our original memories in the normal course of recall. So an “actual” memory might wind up as much of a mirage as a mistaken feeling of familiarity.
