: Thallium and its ions

I am studying the P-block and I have some questions about Thallium and its ions Tl(I) and Tl(III) . I have been taught that due to the poor screening effect of 4d and 5f orbitals , the outer orbital electrons of 6p and 6s are very highly attracted by the nucleus.

So, we are able to rip out the 6p¹ electron and turn it to a Tl(I) but then we are not able to pull out the 6s² electrons because it is very tightly held. So, Tl(III) doesn’t exist and if it does then it is very unstable. [ This also ties with the TlCl and TlCl3 questions]

But we also have been taught before that the orbitals are filled in this order ( after 4p ) – 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f 5d 6p . So , after pulling the 6p¹ electron shouldn’t we be ripping out the 5d electrons ?

I think you’ll have better luck posting this on a chemistry subreddit, this is beyond the scope of ELI5.
