I’m playing a custom tournament in FIFA and I’m confused. I know how the legs work and stuff, like one of my teams in a different tie had a 3-1 agg to catch up on, they managed to win 4-2 on “away goals.” Is that just the actual scoreline, since I had already tied to aggregate?
Now, I’m playing a different tie. I had a 2-1 advantage coming out of the first leg. Now I’m playing the second leg, it’s tied on aggregate 5-5 and I’m behind 4-3, but the commentators keep saying I’ll be going through. I’m confused 😭

In competitions where away goals are used as a tiebreaker, If the aggregate scores are tied, the team who scored the most goals away from home wins. So (home team v away team):
Team A 2:1 Team B
Team B 1:0 Team A
Aggregate score is 2:2 – Team B wins on away goals, because they scored 1 goal away from home, while Team A didn’t score any.
The “away goals” rule is used to decide the winner when 2-leg matches end in a tie. Away goals are usually the only tiebreaker; if they are equal as well the match will go into overtime.
People sometimes mention the “away goals count double” rule which practically means the same thing, but they often fail to mention that this is only applied when the total score is tied. So if you lose at home with 3-5 and then win away with 0-3, you will progress because the total score is 6-5. Whereas doublinng away goals would mean the opponent would progress (9-10 after doubling).
It’s worth mentioning that major european competitions like the UCL (champions league) and the europa league have generally abandoned this rule, and always go to overtime now (which is 2x 15mins and then penalties). I’m not sure if and how much the rest of the world has followed.
