Like you’re 5 … think about your body like it’s a building with a power panel (brain) and wiring running all over (nerves).
If someone cuts through a wall (skin) and nicks a wire (nerve) the panel (brain) gets a signal there’s a short and it can cause strange power issues beyond the nick in the wire. The building (you) can usually function in some form like this until it’s repaired (until the nerve heals). Some wires are important and damage can be serious, others are minor and cutting them is nuisance.
If they cut through it totally, the panel gets a signal and also loses contact with (loses control of) the circuit and anything beyond where the cut is. Once a wire is cut totally it’s (generally) done, gone, all control is lost and won’t return.
