2 strokes engine completes all of the stages of work of the power cycle (suction, compression, enrichment, ignition work and exhaust) within 2 (one up one down) strokes of the engine pistons and one revolution of the crankshaft, while a 4 stroke does it in four (2 up 2 down) and two revolutions of the crankshaft. The main thing here is that the 2 stroke engine is simpler and cheaper to manufacture but is considered to be less environmentally friendly. 2 stroke engines are still popular in very small engines if mopeds and such in places where emitions are less regulated.
