the difference between Aggregate and Total

Aggregate, in terms of numbers, usually refers to different ways of boiling a bunch of data down to one number. Total is an aggregate, but so are min, max, mean and median for example.

It does depend on context, though. Some fields will have specific meanings for this. For an extreme example and geologist and a DBA will have very different ideas about what it means.
