FBI is a federal law enforcement agency that mostly investigates crime, such as cyber crime, corruption, trafficking in people, organized crime like the Mafia or drug cartels or gangs, and crimes that go across state borders. You can get a fuller picture here – https://www.fbi.gov/investigate They also do *counter-intelligence* missions – basically, looking for enemy spies in the US.

The CIA is about collecting intelligence through human sources about *other* countries.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the federal police agency who enforce federal law. The Central Intelligence Agency collects intelligence from all over and relays information to relevant government agencies like the military, the FBI, as well as scientific and political sectors. And the CIA don’t really have an enforcement arm.

FBI – Frderal Bureau of Investigation. These are basically police officers who work for the federal government.

There are three kinds of laws. Local, state, and federal. Local means laws made in towns or cities. These usually employ normal police. State enforces laws mandated by the specific state you’re in. Each state has its own set of laws. These guys usually fill in the gaps between cities and towns. When you think of “the police,” you will probably think of local or state cops. The federal government is made from the fine people on Capital Hill. They have a set of laws that apply to all fifty states. These laws are usually bigger than local or state laws. It is the FBI’s job to enforce these laws where they need to.

The CIA is the Central Intelligence Agency. They are closer to the military. The people who work there are what you might call spies. They look for enemies to America and disrupt them.

The FBI is law enforcement. If you commit a Federal offense, the FBI can investigate. So things like bank robbery, murder and moving the body over state lines to dispose of it, major fraud, stuff like that gets investigated by the FBI.

The CIA does not care about crime. Their whole thing is gathering intelligence to strengthen America’s strategic position on the world stage.

Now that’s pretty broad goal, and covers everything from wire tapping and paying informants, all the way to assassinations and starting coups in other countries.

*THEORETICALLY* the CIA does not conduct operations against US targets. But that’s most likely untrue. But they’re supposed to target foreign entities. Either terrorists, other countries, foreign businesses, etc.
