The story of [Rosemary Kennedy ](https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/rosemary-kennedy-the-eldest-kennedy-daughter.htm#:~:text=Lobotomy,by%20the%20American%20Medical%20Association.) is a pretty heartbreaking tale about the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of lobotomies.

A lobotomy was an old medical procedure where doctors would damage a part of a person’s brain on purpose. They thought it might help with some mental health problems, but we now know it was very harmful.

After a lobotomy, people often changed a lot. They might seem calmer, but in a way that’s more like they don’t care about anything anymore. They could have trouble thinking clearly or remembering things. Their personality could change – they might not seem like the same person. They might have difficulty with emotions, either feeling too little or having trouble controlling their feelings. Sometimes they had physical problems too, like headaches or trouble moving normally.

Today, doctors know that lobotomies hurt people more than they helped. We have much better and safer ways to help people with mental health issues now. Lobotomies are not used anymore because they caused a lot of harm to the people who had them.
