The Hindu concept of spirit is almost like a fluid. When you as an individual came into being, you were like an empty cup that was dipped into the waters to fill up with a soul. No soul will ever be exactly like you because it won’t ever be composed of the exact same spirit.
If you take all of the souls that exist, that is brahman. It is all of the spirit of the entire universe. Everything is just a tiny part of it temporarily taken away and put in a little cup, and eventually it flows back into the whole.
The gods and goddesses are extremely powerful representations of brahman, but ultimately not any different from a human or a grasshopper or a rock.
