A gene is a specific section of DNA that codes for a specific piece of data; it’s like the different blanks on the form.

Alleles are particular alternate forms of the gene; they’re like the value that you’d actually write into the blank, such as “brown” or “blue” or “grey” or “hazel”.

So if the gene named *rbprotein* is responsible for a protein found in the membranes of red blood cells, the alleles are the different sequences coding for the various proteins that could potentially be there. If a person has protein A, they have the A allele; protein B, the B allele; AB, they have copies of both alternate values of that gene.
