Trucks with a double trailer of dirt haulers seem to usually have a very long, adjustable beam between the two trailers, sometimes longer than than the second trailer. Why is it so long?

It allows them to dump from both beds more easily. They can jack-knife the truck and trailer so that they can dump out of the truck without hitting the trailer, and then dump out of the trailer. It also makes it easier to get around corners on the road.

These are called drawbars, their length is often to comply with Gross weights for length https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawbar_(haulage)
