The stripy bits have a special pair of properties – they make more of the same colour close to them, but prevent the colour forming a medium distance from them. A long distance away they have no effect

This means that you end up with a coloured bit that reinforces itself, AND creates a gap between that coloured bit and the next coloured bit – creating the basics of the pattern.
