When light passes through a colloid, the partials in the colloid scatter the light. This effect can easily be demonstrated by shinning a light through a glass of water compared to a glass of milk. The light shines through the water because it is not a colloid. When you shine the light on the milk it “shines back” because the light beam bounces off suspended particles in the milk.
