The short version is that your brain knows that everything isn’t supposed to be red, and so it adjusts your vision to compensate.

You’ll have noticed this: when you first put on the glasses, everything seems really red; later, everything is only a little red.

You can think about it as your brain going into editing software and screwing with the color balance of your sight to make it look more correctly balanced. It pushes the red down and pulls the blue and green up.

Later, when you take off the glasses, your vision is still “adjusted” for a red filter, so everything looks more of the opposite of red – which is actually more greenish than yellow (you may have some minor level of red-green colorblindness, which would cause green and yellow things to look similar).

I’m from a town where everyone skis, so I’m more familiar with the phenomenon where people take off their brown/orange goggles and everything looks blue.
