What are art prints and why are they valuable?

I always thought art prints were just easily replicable copies of original art and were otherwise cheap and worthless. I literally thought they could just be a piece of original art that was copied and reproduced from a printer… but it seems like a print of a famous piece can be quite valuable.

What exactly are art prints and why can they have lots of value even though they aren’t originals?

Mostly they are produced by the artist to as high a standard as possible. Limited run of numbered prints give them some sort of scarcity value that people will pay for.

They have value because the art is actually etched into the plates by the artists. They’re also printed by them in limited numbers. Scarcity isn’t the only thing that affects value. They more you print also affects the quality of the prints since the plates are delicate.

They are just printed copies, but are the copies the artist made initially. They are valuable the same way the number one first copy first edition book is valuable, even if it’s physically the same as any other printed copy

Reproducing art is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Sure, you can take a digital image of a painting and print it, but compare the painting and the print and you see that so much is lost – it’s simply a photo of a work of art.

Quality prints of an original painting are works of art themselves. They have been meticulously created to convey the true colors of the original (difficult to do,) the line and form, and the “feel” of the original. Sometimes there is a texture to the painting, which is very difficult to convey in 2D.

i wanted to print my own anime posters, so i did some research on making my own prints. a poster size print on high quality paper and ink.

let me tell you. the processes of getting your own unique high quality print is going to be way more expensive than buying it from the artist themselves.

they have a few things going for them:

+ working closely with a print company

+ bulk production

+ experience

+ quality checks

+ much more
