What are art prints and why are they valuable?

I always thought art prints were just easily replicable copies of original art and were otherwise cheap and worthless. I literally thought they could just be a piece of original art that was copied and reproduced from a printer… but it seems like a print of a famous piece can be quite valuable.

What exactly are art prints and why can they have lots of value even though they aren’t originals?

Reproducing art is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Sure, you can take a digital image of a painting and print it, but compare the painting and the print and you see that so much is lost – it’s simply a photo of a work of art.

Quality prints of an original painting are works of art themselves. They have been meticulously created to convey the true colors of the original (difficult to do,) the line and form, and the “feel” of the original. Sometimes there is a texture to the painting, which is very difficult to convey in 2D.
