What are depository receipts?

Question

I went to the bank earlier to run an errand, and found a poster offering depository receipts, as well as some information. Problem is, any information I can find is in impenetrable jargon. Is there a plain english explanation?

It essentially allows you to buy shares of a foreign company with having to trade on that foreign stock exchange.
